XJS & Sotheby’s Institute of Art–Oriental Art Premier Course

Xia Jing Shan, 1923-2019, is recognized as the first Buddhist Art Maestro across centuries. His Buddhist painting art transcends the image norms of religious belief and creates a new realm of cross era aesthetics. His works are in the collection at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, the Palace Museum in Beijing, the National Museum of China, and the Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum.

In 2021, Xia Jing Shan Arts & Culture Foundation collaborated with Sotheby’s Institute of Art London to introduce the ” Oriental Art Premier Program”. Dr. Katie Hill, Program Director, MA Modern and Contemporary Asian Art, Sotheby’s Institute of Art London, and Dr. Chung-Chieh Chao, CEO of Xia Jing Shan Arts& Culture Foundation, served as the program leaders. The leaders invited art experts to take an international macro perspective from a simple point of view, Buddhist art, Asian contemporary art, and the Asian art market. The courses form part of the initiative, including historical and cultural context, aesthetic appreciation, and market observation. Furthermore, the program involved appreciating contemporary art masters such as fine jewellery, porcelain, calligraphy, and paintings to provide art lovers with the essence of courses of international top art online courses.

This series of courses contain many unprecedented highlights. Importantly, this is the first and the only tailormade program with the world’s top institution, Sotheby’s Institute of Art London. The program has been outstanding due to the conclusion of cross domain industrial contacts, the integration with the world’s top art social platform, the personal teaching of the world’s top art professional teachers. The program’s uniqueness has continued to stand out because of the special planning of physical art salon, masterpiece appreciation, market exchange, and practice sharing. In support of communication strategy, efforts have been made to deepen the application of professional knowledge in English (specially assigned person for Chinese interpretation). Xia Jing Shan Arts & Culture Foundation is based in Taipei, Taiwan. Interestingly, the art program is expanding the impact worldwide, creating a new vision of the blue ocean of art and culture as well as promoting Chinese culture. The art has largely entered the international stage under the influence of the world’s top art resources.

The latest exhibition of the Xia Jing Shan Arts & Culture Foundation is “Immortal Officials of Happiness, Wealth, and Longevity Gather in Celebration: Zhong Kui Exhibition of Mastero Xia Jing Shan” which taken place in Renaissance Hotel Shilin, Taipei.

This exhibition features a selection of Xia Jing Shan’s paintings of Zhong Kui to give Lunar New Year blessings to the viewers. The display is divided into four sections: Zhong Kui Moving His House, Blessing Zhong Kui, The Scholar Zhong Kui and Zhong Kui with Buddhist Heart. Based on the creative environment of Chinese painting, there is a creation of a unique spiritual level and space of Zhong Kui’s image. The exhibition aims at making the viewer feel peaceful both physically and mentally.
