Maurizio Ferraris〝REAL CAPITALS IN VIRTUAL WORLDS〞

What does reality mean in a virtual space? Is there a relationship of continuity between the two spheres or are they totally separate? How much does the known world influence the construction of the digital space and, on the contrary, how does the image of the latter modify our experience of reality? And finally, how should an online art institution be, what degree of reality can or should it maintain?
After the success of the first meeting on the theme of participation with Nicolas Bourriaud, which has seen over 2500 users connected live from all over the world, the second meeting of the Institution Under Construction program addresses the theme of “realism”, a key theme today, especially while creating an online art institution. To open this review, could only be called the father of contemporary realism, the philosopher Maurizio Ferraris, famous author of the Manifesto of the New Realism (2012) and Documanity. Philosophy of the New World (2021), which conducts an investigation in the virtual world in search of traces of reality, old and new to answer the questions involved.
Starting from his historical theory enunciated in the Manifesto of the New Realism, Ferraris comes to demonstrate that virtual reality is not so different from the reality that surrounds us but that between them there is a natural relationship of continuity, as the first “capitalizes” centuries of history of our interpretation of reality. Therefore the title of the meeting: Real Capitals in Virtual Worlds.
The conference, introduced by Francesca Panseri, will be followed by questions from the audience.
